Azerbaijan: the donor system
The life of someone being treated for leukaemia often depends on strangers: blood donors, platelet donors and sometimes stem cell donors. This chapter explains how donation is organised in Azerbaijan and how you can help.

01Short answer
02Simple explanation
A blood donor gives blood for red cells and plasma.
A platelet donor can give only platelets using a special machine.
A stem cell donor is needed for a transplant; the search starts in the family.
03Scientific explanation
Voluntary donation: according to the WHO, the safest blood comes from voluntary, unpaid, regular donors, among whom infections are least common.
Stem cell registries: the World Marrow Donor Association (WMDA) links national registries; millions of volunteers are registered worldwide and donors can be searched across countries.
04What happens in the body?
How does blood donation work?
You fill in a questionnaire, and a doctor checks your blood pressure, haemoglobin and general health. The donation itself takes about 10 minutes, followed by a short rest. Find the address and rules on the centre’s official website.

Stem cell donors
When a transplant is needed, siblings’ HLA types are checked first. If no relative matches, a half-matched (haploidentical) relative or a donor from an international registry may be discussed.

How can you help?
Become a regular blood donor, invite friends, and share accurate information about donation. Each unit can help several patients.
