In the Netherlands, getting a second opinion is a patient’s right, and it is often paid for by basic insurance.

01Short answer

Your haematologist or GP usually writes the referral for a second opinion. A haematologist at another hospital reviews your records and results; your first team usually continues the treatment. Check payment terms with your insurer in advance. Asking for a second opinion is not a sign of distrust in your team.

02Simple explanation

Right: under the WGBO.

Referral: from a doctor.

Payment: often by insurance.

03Scientific explanation

When it helps: with a rare type, a complex decision or a transplant choice.

Research: a second opinion may also reveal new clinical trials.
