01Short answer

Ask the hospital for a written cost estimate and what it leaves out (complications, medicines, repeat tests). Many centres require a deposit or prepayment. If your insurance pays for treatment abroad, get written approval in advance. The European Union has rules on cross-border healthcare. Check visa rules for medical travel only on official government websites, and plan ahead for a visa extension if treatment runs long. Keep a reserve fund.

02Simple explanation

Pre-approval: from your insurer.

03Scientific explanation
