ANC and your day: planning by your count
The ANC, or absolute neutrophil count, is the main measure of infection risk. Knowing it makes it easier to plan the day: when to be more careful and when you can be a little freer.

01Short answer
02Simple explanation
Ask for your ANC.
Know your nadir days.
Low: stay home.
Rules: from your team.
03Scientific explanation
NCI: the ANC shows how severe neutropenia is; the risk of infection rises as the ANC falls.
NCI: chemotherapy can lower neutrophils, platelets and red cells, which raises the risk of infection, bleeding and fatigue.
04What happens in the body?
How it is worked out
The ANC is calculated from the white cell count and the share of neutrophils.

Nadir
The lowest point of the counts after chemotherapy.
Neutrophils
The first defence against infection; when they are low, hygiene matters most.
Platelets
Help blood clot; when they are low, protect yourself from injury.
05Daily protection: four steps
Wash, protect, check, report.
