01Short answer

Intensive chemotherapy and transplants usually take place in large teaching hospitals; later treatment often continues closer to home through “shared care”. In England, the NHS Constitution describes a right to choose a hospital in some cases. Private hospitals exist too, but are paid for separately.

02Simple explanation

Teaching hospital: complex treatment.

Local hospital: follow-up.

Private: paid.

03Scientific explanation

Networks: regional cancer networks link hospitals.

Choice: the right to choose differs between nations.
